The role of cable shielding layer

Cable shielding plays a vital role in ensuring the proper operation and safety of various electronic devices and systems. The function of the shielding layer is to protect the cable from external electromagnetic interference and prevent the leakage of electromagnetic radiation from the cable itself. This is particularly important in applications where signal integrity and data transmission are critical, such as telecommunications, industrial automation and medical equipment.

The shield is usually made of a conductive material such as copper or aluminum and is wrapped around the inner conductor of the cable. This conductive layer acts as a barrier, effectively preventing external electromagnetic fields from penetrating the cable and interfering with the signals being transmitted. Additionally,it contains any electromagnetic radiation produced by the cable, preventing it from causing interference with other nearby electronic equipment. The role of the metal shield layer in the cable is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

①Strengthen the role of the limiting electric field in the insulation layer, so that the electric field direction is consistent with the direction of the insulation radius (that is radial), and the metal shielding belt is grounded. The electric field terminates on the metal band, and there is no longer an electric field outside the metal band.

②Prevent axial surface discharge. When the cable is not well grounded, because the semi-conductive layer has a certain resistivity, it may cause uneven potential distribution along the cable axis, resulting in cable surface discharge.

③The plant protection system requires outer conductor shielding. The wrapped copper strip has excellent lightning protection characteristics.

④Under normal conditions, the capacitor current flows through, and the metal strip can be used as the circuit of the short-circuit fault current in the case of short circuit.
